Flavors of strawberry, mocha, grapefruit and candied lemon. Many Q’eqchi’-Maya families live in the “Lachuá Ecoregion” around the lake, who earn their living by growing cocoa, honey, cardamom, corn and other crops. The cocoa farmers are organized in three certified organic community associations, each with its own fermentation and drying facility. These farmers led the way in creating a buffer zone that protects the flora and fauna of the lagoon and helps keep the sanctuary from invasion of palm plantations and other intense crops. The communities around the lagoon take the preservation of the surrounding ecosystem very seriously and many families in this region still live completely without electricity, internet or telephone. We love its taste for its unique acidity, which is not common in other Guatemalan cocoa varieties.
